The roots of this Section trace back to the June 1973 Resolution. When the UHM was first set up in 1966 – then known as Malta Government Clerical Union – the Union was a sectoral union for Government workers in clerical grades in the Civil Service.
In the 1973 Resolution, the Malta Government Clerical Union grew from a sectoral union for Government workers in clerical grades in the Civil Service and extended its membership to all workers in the Public Sector, irrespective of grade or category, changing its name to Malta Government Employees Union.
Following this Resolution, in the same year the Departmental Section was set up to cater for workers in Departmental Grades and Professional Officers in Parastatal Bodies and Public Corporations.
As this Section continued to grow, it was felt that in order to ensure a better service to its members, this Section should be split into two Sections. In December 1994, the Departmental and Parastatal Section was split into the Departmental Section, and the Parastatal Section respectively.
Recently the Port, Transport and Aviation Section was borne out of a UHM reorganisation programme in February 2003. During this reorganisation process, among others, the Parastatal Section was split into two Sections; the Public Entities Section and this, the Port, Transport and Aviation Section.
The Port, Transport and Aviation Section caters for all workers in public and private companies within the ports and transport sector.
